Nexus Maine - August 5
Our first webinar, a monthly Nexus happy hour, member momentum, events and an exciting spotlight
The summer is flying by but this group is taking no time off. Members of this community are starting companies, launching products (like this Kickstarter campaign), hiring first employees and helping others succeed. It is beyond rewarding for us to see this level of activity and we are so excited to watch this community continue to develop.
We are thrilled to announce that at 12pm on Friday, August 16th, we will be hosting our first webinar featuring Marty Grohman. We will be talking about him, his journey to becoming mayor of Biddeford and why Maine is the best place to start your business. You can sign up for the event here!
Lastly, as always, if you know anyone great for this group, please make sure to send them this invite link.

Member spotlight: Tim Poterba
“Hi! I’m Tim. I’ve spent the last decade immersed at the boundary of biology and software engineering, and last year co-founded E9 Genomics, a deep tech startup building search software to unlock the value of biological data for human health.
My open-source career so far
I spent 9 years at the Broad Institute in Cambridge combining compilers, query optimizers, and massively scalable algorithms in open-source software used to create and analyze many of the largest genomic databases in the world. I learned that biological data looks different from the data that drives the tech industry, and that software tools and infrastructure from big tech usually don’t translate to transformative impact in the life sciences.
Why Maine?
I married a Mainer and followed her to Portland in 2016 for school and residency. That meant lots of time on the Downeaster, and I can highly recommend catching sunrise or sunset (or both in the same day!) across the Scarborough marshes by train. We now live in the woods in Kennebunk with our 2-year-old, and I continue to love Maine’s unique combination of community, independent spirit, and inescapable natural beauty.
Away from the keyboard
I like working with my hands to get a break from programming, whether in the garden (constantly fighting back the encroaching forest), making furniture, or DIY projects around the house. But with a young child and a young startup, hobby time is scarcer than it used to be!
Let’s talk!
I love meeting new people and talking shop across life sciences, software engineering, statistics/ML/AI, and entrepreneurship, especially when there’s a local connection. You can find me on LinkedIn, email, and at various Nexus events!”
Thank you for making this community special, everyone! See you on Slack.
